Ulrike Flader
Ulrike Flader is a lecturer at the Department of Anthropology and Cultural Research and postdoc researcher of the Soft Authoritarianisms Research Group led by University Bremen Excellence Chair Prof. Dr. Shalini Randeria.
She holds a PhD from the University of Manchester and has worked in and on Turkey for many years. Her research is located in the field of anthropology of the state. It centres on questions of governmentality, authoritarianism, citizenship, political subjectivity, everyday resistance and social movements. For her PhD, she conducted a multi-site ethnographic study analyzing specific practices of everyday resistance of Kurds in Turkey against the state policies of assimilation. She thereby focussed on certain rituals, objects and practices in the everyday, through which these techniques of citizenship are put into practice, and how they are undermined and subverted from below.
Her present research examines current forms of government which blur the line between authoritarian and democratic rule. As part of the Soft Authoritarianisms Research Group, she is conducting a case study on Turkey, in which she focusses on the ambivalent and fluid political, juridical, and social configurations which manage to dismantle of opposition, and specifically on the affective production of apathy in this context.

Ulrike Flader teaches in political anthropology, introduction to social and cultural anthropology, ethnographic research methods, and on the Kurdish Question.
