Physics professor Justus Notholt travels for research to Palau, an island nation 1,000 km east of the Philippines. It is home to an atmospheric measuring station established ten years ago by the University of Bremen and the Alfred Wegener Institute as part of the EU project StratoClim. He has also taught students at two High Schools there.

The 6G mobile communications standard is set to be introduced at the end of this decade. The goal: more secure and faster connections, including for drones, flying platforms and satellites. The project “Holistic 3D Communication Networks for 6G (6G-TakeOff)” investigated how 6G can be made possible.

Methane emissions from a large open-cast coal mine in Australia are 3 to 8 times higher than reported. This has been revealed in a study based on aircraft based measurements by the University of Bremen. Together with Airborne Research Australia (ARA), researchers from the Institute of Environmental Physics carried out the measurements in the Bowen Basin in Queensland, Australia. It is the first time that precise data has been available.

The European Geosciences Union (EGU) has named the recipients of next year’s Medals and Awards. Monika Rhein, professor at the Institute of Environmental Physics, receives the Fridtjof Nansen Medal, which recognizes her scientific achievements and outstanding research in the field of oceanography. The EGU is the largest organization for Earth system, planetary and space research in Europe. The prices will be awarded during the EGU General Assembly 2022, which will be held from April 3 to 8.

As part of the MOSAiC Expedition Dr. Gunnar Spreen, the leader of the Remote Sensing of Polar Regions working group at the IUP of Faculty 1, and many other scientists are on their way to the Arctic with the research vessel Polarstern. By mid-December, Spreen and his team will collect data on ice thickness, snow characteristics and much more, which will then be compared with the measurements that they have been taking for several years via satellites.
