  • Limnogeology, using sedimentology and geochemistry of lake sediments for reconstructions of paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic changes.

My research is centered on limnogeology, with a particular emphasis on the sedimentology and geochemistry of lacustrine sediments as archives of past environmental and climatic changes. By analyzing lake deposits, I investigate long-term paleoenvironmental dynamics, reconstructing shifts in hydrology, vegetation, erosion patterns, and climate variability over decadal to millennial timescales.

 

  • XRF scanning, data analysis and method development for environmental samples.

A key methodological component of my work involves X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanning of environmental samples, which enables high-resolution, non-destructive elemental analysis of sediment cores. I actively contribute to the development and optimization of XRF scanning protocols for environmental samples, ensuring data quality, reproducibility, and robust interpretation. This approach allows for the rapid assessment of geochemical proxies that reflect changes in sediment provenance, weathering intensity, and input from glacial and fluvial sources.

 

  • Analyzing clastic and proglacial sedimentary systems as archives of glacial history.

A focus of my work is the study of clastic and proglacial sedimentary systems, which serve as sensitive indicators of glacial activity and climate-driven changes in mountainous and polar regions. These systems record the advance and retreat of glaciers, meltwater dynamics, and the evolution of glacial landscapes through time. By integrating sedimentological facies analysis with geochemical signatures, I reconstruct the timing, magnitude, and mechanisms of past glacial fluctuations.

 

  • Monitoring particle dynamics to improve process understanding.

Furthermore, I conduct monitoring of particle dynamics in lakes, combining field measurements with sediment trap data and hydrological modeling. This enables a direct link between modern sediment transport processes and the interpretation of ancient sediment records, enhancing the accuracy of paleoenvironmental reconstructions.

 

  • Improving paleoclimatic reconstructions by combining archive analysis using XRF techniques with process studies.

Together, these approaches provide a comprehensive framework for understanding how climate change has shaped lake systems and their surrounding landscapes. My work aims at bridging the gap between modern process studies and long-term paleoclimatic reconstructions, contributing to improved predictions of future environmental change in glacier-adjacent and sub-polar regions.
