Courses Profiles

The Institute of Geography offers a B.A. and B.Sc. program as well as a dual subject bachelor with and without a teaching option. The social science orientated B.A. focuses on human geography, while the natural science orientated B.Sc. concentrates on physical geography. The essential strength of the B.A. study program is its emphasis on the spatial dimension of social science topics and questions of the humanities. The B.Sc. program links physical geographical and methodical issues with natural and Earth sciences. Moreover, B.A. students enrolled at the University of Oldenburg can choose geography at the University of Bremen as second subject.

In addition to the Master of Education designed for the education of future teachers, we offer a master’s program in ‘Urban and Regional Development’ (M.A.). This master’s program focuses on the dynamics of spatial differentiations in urban and regional contexts; it provides knowledge of urban and regional transformation processes and integrates project-oriented teaching in the curriculum. This interdisciplinary master’s program is collectively run by the Institutes of Geography and Sociology and therefore unique in urban and regional research. A third master’s program with the focus on ‘Physical Geography: Environmental History’ (M.Sc.) is offered in cooperation with the Geoscience and Environmental Physics departments. The latter two master’s programs are research-orientated and enable a continuation towards a professional career in the field of (applied) science or – on an individual basis – in the framework of one of the offered PhD programs.

Studying Abroad

We strongly advise students to train their foreign language skills and undertake an internship or a semester studying abroad. Funding is usually available to support such stays abroad and students must be at least in their third semester of studies. The Institute for Geography maintains partnerships with universities in almost all European countries and beyond Europe.
