WHO indicates that 25% of all deaths in developing countries are attributed to environmental factors, whereas only 17% of deaths are attributed to such causes in developed regions and these differences are increasing. Viewed from the environmental justice perspective, socioeconomically disadvantaged people from poorer nations are often exposed to higher levels of environmental stress, suggesting that it is even more relevant to assess social inequalities in environmental exposures in the Global South.

Environmental inequalities are being assessed either by measuring objectively, subjectively via questionnaire or through participatory approaches whereby individuals can decide for themselves to report on the type and extent of environmental exposures. However, subjective assessments regarding the fairness or equity of the distribution of environmental burdens have so far been less investigated, except for the DASEIN project at the IPP, more . Until now, the DASEIN project is based in the German context. It is yet to be broadened in its scope with more and varied urban and environmental experiences in mind.

In this study, DASEIN-NP, we aim to adapt and extend the concept of the DASEIN to the Global South’s context, particularly in Nepal. The project aims to examine the adaptability and feasibility of using digital technology (mobile app) to perform participatory space- and time- based subjective assessment of an individuals’ exposure to environmental factors and individual’s subjective judgements on just/fair exposure distributions. Furthermore, it examines the feasibility of studying within-person variation of subjective perception to environmental exposures and evaluation of justice in the context of Global South in Nepal. By culminating the lessons learned from both the Global North and the Global South context, this study will provide a more comprehensive understanding of using digital technology for enabling participatory subjective assessment of (in)justice in environmental exposures, thereby it will contribute in developing digitally enabled participatory engagement to include subjective perception of environmental (in)justice in healthy urban planning.
