Project details
Recovery oriented praxis in community and inpatient care Program-theory development with realist methods
Ingo Tschinke (Projektleitung);
Description
Background
In recent decades, there have been claims for a shift of mental health care towards a more patient-centred care by implementing a recovery-oriented practice. The models of bio-medical and recovery-oriented practice are still competing. Mental health nurses in particular could make a valuable contribution for the development of a recovery-oriented practice by defining specific work contents and competences.
Goal
Development of a program-theory of a recovery-oriented practice that supports the personal recovery (acceptance of one’s own illness, change of perspectives and development of responsibility and self-care) and combines aspects of clinical recovery in Germany and Switzerland for the benefit of people with mental health problems.
Methods
A Realistic Review will be conducted to find out how recovery-oriented care works for people with mental health problems. Main research questions are what works for whom, why, under which circumstances und in what time the personal recovery. For this review a broad range of literature and information will be used to define personal recovery and to develop an initial program-theory. To refine this programme theory to the conditions in Germany and Switzerland, expert interviews and focus groups are conducted.
Expected Results
Many experts see inpatient and outpatient psychiatric nurses as the professional group that can particularly promote personal recovery in people with mental disorders due to its relationship work and everyday orientation. The development of the program theory is intended to show how the system of psychiatric treatment needs to be changed in order to combine personal recovery and the possibilities of treatment.
