International award for head of the Global Health Department at the IPP

Dr. H. Herwansyah from Universitas Jambi in Indonesia is spending five weeks as a visiting scholar in the Department of Global Health at the IPP.

A two-day training workshop titled “Story Matters”, organized by the German Global Health Research Alliance (GLOHRA) Academy and supported by the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), took place on 27–28 October 2025 at the Haus der Wissenschaft in Bremen.

Three Department of Global Health members, Sophie Unterkircher, Anil Fastenau, and Matthew Willis, collaborated on a new Lancet Global Health study analyzing over 40 years of leprosy routine data in Pakistan.

At the EDCTP Forum, Anil Fastenau presented the session "Stopping Leprosy Transmission", highlighting how integrating leprosy interventions into broader skin NTD strategies can improve early detection and support long-term disease management.

On June 6th 2025, members of GLOHRA discussed how scientific findings could be conveyed to policymakers and the public at the 'Storytelling in Science-Policy Transfer' community roundtable event in Berlin.

The WHO concluded its second global meeting on skin-related neglected tropical diseases (skin NTDs) last week with an urgent call for more integrated approaches and intensified partnerships to achieve the goals of the NTD Roadmap 2030.

The report “10 New Insights in Climate Science” shows the threatening consequences of climate change: rising temperatures are endangering oceans, the Amazon rainforest and maternal health worldwide. Researchers call for decisive action.

Prof. Dr. Melanie Böckmann has been the appointed Professor of Global Health at the University of Bremen since February 1st, 2023 and spokesperson for the Department of Global Health at the Institute of Public Health and Nursing.
