SoKIP: Exploratory project on AI in care

Duration: 01.04.2020 - 30.11.2020
Project Partner: Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin): Einstein-Zentrum Digitale Zukunft (ECDF); Verband für Digitalisierung in der Sozialwirtschaft e.V. (vediso)
Project Type: Third-party funded project

Description

The research project aims to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in care. SoKIP explores needs, application scenarios, prerequisites, framework conditions and conditions for success for research and development in the field of AI in care. The aim of SoKIP is to develop a concept for embedding AI systems in care, taking into account the perspectives of various stakeholder groups.

Although digital technologies themselves have been increasingly developed and researched for use in nursing practice for several years, the international literature on AI systems has so far primarily focussed on research into robotic systems. There appears to be largely untapped potential for the use of AI systems with regard to complex decision support in care, for example. In addition, the use of AI may harbour particular potential for supporting nursing staff in non-patient activities. Application scenarios for the direct support of people in need of care themselves and their relatives are also of interest, for which there has already been trial experience of AI systems in various settings for several years. However, the extent to which these solutions are suitable for practical use and fulfil the special requirements of nursing care has not yet been sufficiently researched.

The SoKIP project thus contributes to reducing entry barriers for the development, research and implementation of AI systems in care and to exploring application scenarios for the support of care activities by AI systems.

By combining both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis with a focus on a participatory, open approach, the project aims to promote interdisciplinary cooperation and provide information on best practice examples that strengthen a community approach and help to raise awareness of the topic of AI systems in care in the specialist and practice community.
