LEMEX Practice Reports

Entrepreneurial ecosystems:

Entrepreneurial ecosystems are spatially limited regions that offer a conducive environment for entrepreneurship through the action of networked independent actors and regional resources, thus providing favorable conditions for the development of start-ups. But what are the main characteristics of these regions? Which elements are decisive for the promotion of start-ups and how do they affect the entrepreneurs? These and similar questions are addressed in the module, which looks at start-up ecosystems from several perspectives (including entrepreneurs, established companies with innovation intentions, start-up supporters and venture capital providers, economic development agencies). Students work in groups on tasks to promote the development of Bremen's start-up ecosystem and gain practical experience in the field of entrepreneurship support in cooperation with founders and practice partners.

As part of this seminar, 31 Master's students worked with practice partners to examine the status quo of Bremen's start-up ecosystem and develop solutions to overcome identified weaknesses.

Concepts were developed on the following topics:

  • Female Entrepreneurship: Challenges and support needs in Bremen
  • Student Entrepreneurship: Cross-university networking of Bremen students interested in starting a business
  • Social Entrepreneurship: Systematic and problem-based overview of social innovation developments for stakeholder networking in Bremen
  • Social Entrepreneurial Ecosystems: Development concept with recommendations for action for Bremen
  • Startup support: Overview of existing support services and identification of gaps in Bremen's service structure - concept proposal for improved networking between startups and SMEs
  • Startup location: Supra-regional visibility of Bremen's startup ecosystem

Entrepreneurial Ecosystems:

An entrepreneurial ecosystem refers to geographically defined regions which, through the interaction of interconnected independent actors and regional resources, provide a supportive environment for entrepreneurship and thus create favourable conditions for the development of start-ups. But what are their defining characteristics? Which elements are crucial for start-up support here, and how do they influence entrepreneurs? This module addresses these and similar questions, examining start-up ecosystems from multiple perspectives (including entrepreneurs, established companies with innovation ambitions, start-up supporters and venture capitalists, and business development agencies). Students work in groups on tasks aimed at promoting the development of Bremen’s start-up ecosystem, thereby gaining practical experience in the field of entrepreneurship support in collaboration with founders and industry partners.

As part of this seminar, 27 Master’s students, in collaboration with industry mentors, examined the current state of Bremen’s start-up ecosystem and developed solutions to address identified weaknesses.

Concepts were developed on the following topics:

  • Migrant Entrepreneurship: Targeted promotion of the Starthaus programme within migrant communities
  • Student Entrepreneurship: Raising awareness of the BRIDGE programme at the University of Bremen
  • Co-founder matching: Supporting the search for start-up teams in Bremen
  • Start-up events: Identifying and filling a gap in Bremen’s event offering
  • Start-up support: Increasing the visibility and transparency of Bremen’s support services
  • Start-up stories: Raising the profile of Bremen’s start-up ecosystem beyond the region through founder profiles
