New Publication in the European Journal of Political Economy

A new paper by Michael Rochlitz, Evgeniya Mitrokhina and Irina Nizovkina has just been published in the current issue of the European Journal of Political Economy. The study shows how entrepreneurs affiliated with the political opposition are discriminated against by Russia’s state bureaucracy.

The paper with the title “Bureaucratic discrimination in electoral authoritarian regimes: Experimental evidence from Russia” is based on a randomized correspondence experiment in 70 Russian regions that was carried out in the spring of 2017. In the experiment, 1504 emails with a brief request for information and various treatments were sent to 188 investment promotion agencies. While entrepreneurs affiliated with the ruling party “United Russia” were 11% more likely to get an answer, entrepreneurs affiliated with the opposition party “Yabloko” received 18% fewer answers than the control group. The quality of answers was also lower for members of the opposition party. The paper can be downloaded from the following link:
