Interdisciplinary exchange enriches: First network meeting on AI in care in Berlin

First network meeting on AI in care: areas of application, challenges and future prospects discussed by 80 people from science, practice, manufacturers and administration in Berlin.

Professional care offers a great deal of potential for the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Areas of application, challenges and future prospects were discussed by 80 people from science, practice, manufacturers and administration on 27 September 2023 in Berlin at the 1st network meeting on artificial intelligence in nursing. The Department of Health Care Research (Prof Dr. Karin Wolf-Ostermann) from IPP (Institute of Public Health and Nursing research) was part of the organization and took also part in. The event was organised under the umbrella of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research's "Making repositories and AI systems usable in everyday care" funding line.
The accompanying scientific project ProKIP, led by Prof. Dr Karin Wolf-Ostermann, organised and designed the exchange.
After a word of greeting by Ms Katrin Nostadt (BMBF) Prof Björn Sellemann from the Göttingen Health Campus began by structuring the topic area in a keynote speech and identifying current and future scenarios for the use of AI solutions in care. The focus was particularly on the availability and necessity of structured data in care. The eight research projects in the funding line, which are currently developing AI solutions for care, and the accompanying project presented their ongoing work to the audience and engaged in dialogue with the audience both inside and outside the programme. Four workshops examined the use of AI in care from different perspectives: Scenarios for the care of the future were developed in a future game, supporting measures for digitalisation in the social economy were developed in dialogue, the involvement of citizens in research and innovation processes was discussed and questions of the ethically responsible use of AI in care were explained.
The day before, employees from the research projects in the funding line met for an internal working meeting. At the event, which was organised as a bar camp, the participants put together a programme with twelve sessions and brought with them a wide range of topics and questions from their work in the projects. This resulted in an intensive and broad exchange on the use of AI in care.

The overarching aim of the accompanying project ProKIP - Process Development and Support for the Use of AI in Nursing - is to support the integration of AI solutions into nursing practice. In collaboration with other project partners, the project is being carried out by Prof Wolf-Ostermann, Dr Kathrin Seibert and Dominik Domhoff from the University of Bremen's nursing care research department.  On the one hand, ProKIP is organising an accompanying, consulting and networking process for eight joint projects in the BMBF funding line "Making repositories and AI systems usable in everyday care". On the other hand, ProKIP is exploring the success factors for the use of AI in nursing care as part of its own research. The ProKIP project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Interested parties can find out more about the projects in the funding line and AI in care at prokip.care
