Equality

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science aims to bring about structural improvements in the area of equal opportunity and gender equality, as well as to eliminate disadvantages faced by women* in their studies, teaching, and research. A continuous goal, in particular, is to increase the proportion of female researchers at all levels so that it corresponds to the proportion of women in the general population. The measures that have been implemented are intended to shorten the long road to achieving this goal. They range from regularly documenting gender equality issues—both quantitatively and qualitatively—to establishing regulations for hiring processes, as well as making specific proposals for research on and support for women.

We use the term “women*” to include cis women, trans women, intersex, and non-binary individuals.

The Women's Representative Collective

We are the women’s representatives of Department 3. As a collective, we consist of several decentralized women’s representatives and represent female professors, female research assistants, and female students on an equal footing. We address all issues that directly or indirectly affect women* in the department. The Women’s Representatives Collective advocates for the interests of women* in all departmental committees and in all personnel and organizational decisions, particularly in appointment and hiring procedures. It contributes to the development of the Women’s Equality Plan and is available to advise members of the department on issues related to career advancement.

The members of the collective are elected at the regular general meetings of women. Every female staff member and student is cordially invited to participate in this election. For women* in the service sector of the University of Bremen—that is, non-academic female staff members—Ms. Wehaus serves as the Women’s Representative for the University of Bremen. You can reach her at: www.uni-bremen.de/frauenbeauftragte/.

Our topics

Although women* are achieving great things in mathematics and computer science, these fields are often still heavily male-dominated. Mutual support is essential if women* are to not only survive but thrive in these fields. For this reason, our goal is to bring women* in our department together and help them network. We want to provide a strong network and a safe space to share experiences, ask questions, and support one another on our academic journeys. Because together, we can break down barriers, highlight role models, and actively shape our department.

The decentralized women’s representatives are involved in the appointment procedures for professorships in the department. The principles and participation procedures are outlined in the following documents:

Current appointment procedures at the University of Bremen are listed here:

As a member institution of the German Research Foundation (DFG), the University of Bremen is committed to complying with the DFG’s gender equality standards. Detailed information on the University of Bremen’s initiatives can be found at

The decentralized women's representatives serve as advisory members on the Departmental Council.

Meeting dates and minutes of the Departmental Council can be found here under Faculty Council.

Some professional associations and companies offer financial support specifically for female computer science students. We receive information on an irregular basis and are passing it on here to potentially interested students in Department 3. We’d be happy to assist you with your applications.
