Interactive lecture: "Gendern auf ... Tagalog"

The second lecture in our series on inclusive language is about the Filipino language Tagalog and its special features. The event will take place on Tuesday, the 16th of January 2024, at 18:00 in the City Library (in the Krimibibliothek section). Anyone interested is very welcome to attend!

"Gendern auf..." is a series of lectures on inclusive language organised by the Instituto Cervantes Bremen together with the Senator for Science and Ports, the Language Centre of the universities in the state of Bremen, the Bremen Language Council, the Goethe Institut and the Institut français. In the second event of the series, we will turn our attention to Tagalog, one of the ergative languages spoken in the Philippines, which has characteristics of gender neutrality. In a practice-orientated lecture, Joyce Salita, English lecturer at the SZHB, will introduce Tagalog, its regional-political-historical context and practical usage scenarios. Examples of gender-neutral characteristics as well as cases of gender marking will be shown. The interactive lecture will conclude with insights into the effects of these features on the spoken language in Philippine society.
