Registration for language courses during the 2026 summer semester is now open. The Language Center of the Universities in the Land of Bremen (SZHB) is offering courses in over 20 languages and in various formats, so there is definitely something for everyone.

YUFE courses for staff members

In the summer semester of 2026, YUFE will once again offer two English courses for staff members. Participants will have the opportunity to improve their language skills in academic contexts and establish international networks.

Physio:logical! - a podcast

Jeremy Hookway's physiotherapy students at are taking an English module and have produced some really great podcast episodes. They discuss exciting topics from the field of physiotherapy in English in an understandable, creative way and with genuine expertise. It's worth a listen!

“Considering Generative AI in Language Education in HE: The Perspectives of Learners, Teachers, and the Language Center,” a new article in Language Teaching Research Quarterly (Dec. 2025). It highlights the opportunities and risks posed by AI for teaching, learning, and testing languages.

SZHB recipe booklet

In 2025, the Language Center of the Universities in the Land of Bremen celebrated its 30th anniversary with numerous events. An open call for submissions resulted in a colorful collection of recipes.


Das Sprachenzentrum der Hochschulen im Land Bremen bietet im Zeitraum Februar bis März 2026 Intensivkurse an. Im oberen Bereich steht groß der Titel „Intensivkurse Februar – März 2026“, rechts daneben befindet sich das Logo des Sprachenzentrums mit dem Hinweis, dass es sich um das Sprachenzentrum der Hochschulen im Land Bremen handelt. Links in der Mitte folgt eine Liste der angebotenen Kurssprachen: Englisch, Französisch, Gebärdensprache, Italienisch, Koreanisch, Niederländisch, Polnisch, Russisch und Spanisch. Es wird auch darauf verwiesen, im Rahmen der Kurse 3 bis 6 ECTS-Punkte zu erwerben, oder es als „General Studies“ Kurs zu absolvieren. Die Einschreibung für die Intensivkurse ist bereits möglich.

In February and March 2026, the Language Center will once again be offering intensive courses in a wide range of languages. Registration is now open.


Quiz on languages at StuCa in Bremerhaven

On Tuesday, December 9, 2025, the SZHB, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, and the AStA student union at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences are hosting a quiz about languages and countries at 6:00 p.m. – presented in a Christmas edition to celebrate the season.

Creative Writing Workshop

Experience how entire linguistic worlds can emerge from just a few words! In the creative writing workshop, you will experiment with different (foreign) languages, discover new vocabularies, and try out methods that will help you start writing even with limited language skills.

The 26th Annual UNIcert® Workshop

At the 26th Annual UNIcert® Workshop at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the focus was on the future of language teaching in the context of digitalization. Representatives from our Language Center discussed current developments in AI-supported formats and new teaching concepts.


Das Sprachenzentrum der Hochschulen im Land Bremen bietet ein Online-Tutorial zur englischen Grammatik für das Sprachniveau B1/B2 an. Der Kurs findet vom 23. Oktober 2025 bis zum 29. Intermediate English Grammar Tutorial (B1/B2)

There are still places available in the Intermediate English Grammar Tutorial (B1/B2)! Would you like to improve your English, refresh your grammar skills, and become more confident in writing and speaking? Then this tutorial is just right for you.


Zusehen sind die Informationen zu einer Workshop-Reihe. Diese findet am 17. November 2025 von 17 bis 18 Uhr mit dem Titel „ChatGPT als Sprachbuddy: Fremdsprachen üben mit KI“ in der Stadtbibliothek Bremen, Zweigstelle Huchting, statt. Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an Personen, die mit Unterstützung von Künstlicher Intelligenz ihre Fremdsprachenkenntnisse verbessern möchten. Für die Teilnahme wird gebeten, ein Smartphone oder Tablet mit einer aktuellen ChatGPT-App mitzubringen. Organisiert wird der Workshop vom Sprachenzentrum der Hochschulen im Land Bremen gemeinsam mit der Stadtbibliothek Bremen. Numerous language cafés and an English grammar tutorial

Next week, we will be starting a total of 10 language cafés in 6 languages and a grammar tutorial for English (B1/B2). These programs are designed for students at Bremen's four public universities and are free of charge.

Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and the Language Center of the Universities in the State of Bremen are jointly hosting a Language Week! On the occasion of Spanish Language Day, the Instituto Cervantes is hosting an afternoon of language games and informational activities with a slide show on the topic of “50 Years of Democracy in Spain: The Culture” on September 11th at the central branch of the city library (Am Wall).

The SZHB has been a joint institution of Bremen's four universities for 30 years now. This anniversary was marked at the end of June with a ceremony at Haus der Wissenschaft, attended by around 70 guests from academic, cultural, and political circles, as well as colleagues and friends of the SZHB.

YUFE Language Courses for Staff

As part of the YUFE Language Programme, new language courses for university staff will begin in September 2025. Courses are offered in English and Spanish, a Language Café is in place for German. All courses are delivered in cooperation with SZHB.

SZHB Staff Talk Highlights Remarkable Growth and Global Engagement

At a recent YUFE meeting (May 22nd) in the YUFE main office in Brussels, the SZHB presented its language offers for YUFE staff: a success story that began with just five course seats and has grown into a vibrant, multilingual program with over 50 seats offered to staff across all YUFE universities.

Renovation of the SLZ at the university

Over the next three weeks, renovation work will be carried out in the Language Resource Center (Selbstlernzentrum Sprachen) at the University of Bremen.


New training course: Pluricultural Communication Skills

In March 2025, we will be offering a brand new three-day training course on “Pluricultural Communication Skills”. This practical training will be held in English and is open to students from all subject areas.


Tutoring program during the semester break

Registration is now open for the tutoring program for independent language learning during the semester break. Participation is free of charge for students.


YUFE Language cafés during the semester break

The online YUFE language cafés will be taking place from February to the beginning of April. Five languages are included in the program. Students at the University of Bremen can participate free of charge.

“How to do language tandems": an event on Nov. 14th at the SLZ

This interactive info session on Thursday, November 14th at 4:00 p.m. will provide tips and insights into learning in language tandems and is aimed at both newcomers to tandems and those who are already learning in a tandem.

Keynote address by Prof. Claudia Harsch

At the EALTA Conference in Belfast last June, Prof. Claudia Harsch gave a keynote address on the topic “Looking at the past, present and future of the CEFR beyond Europe - from the CEFR to a CGFR?”. The talk can now be viewed online.

European Day of Languages

On September 26th, the Instituto Cervantes and the Language Centre of the Universities in the Land of Bremen (SZHB) invite you to celebrate the European Day of Languages at the city library (Zentralbibliothek, Am Wall).


French Language Cafè during the semester break

Starting at the end of July, we will be offering a French language café for the first time during the semester break. The language café is geared towards students and participation is free of charge.


Rooms needed for International Summer School participants

120 students from 20 countries will be attending the 4-week International Summer School at the Language Centre in Bremen from July 29th to August 23rd. Rooms are still needed for some participants.


Intensive language courses from July to September

Soon it will be that time again: our intensive courses are about to start! From July to September, the Language Center will be offering intensive courses in 10 languages. Thai is a new addition to the program. The tutoring program for independent language learning will also be taking place.

The second lecture in our series on inclusive language is about the Filipino language Tagalog and its special features. The event will take place on Tuesday, the 16th of January 2024, at 18:00 in the City Library (in the Krimibibliothek section). Anyone interested is very welcome to attend!

A world of languages at OPEN CAMPUS

New Portugese course starting May 31st

Due to popular demand, an additional Portuguese course for beginners will commence on May 31, 2023 at the SZHB. The course will take place twice a week and registration is now open.


New series of lectures on inclusive language

The Instituto Cervantes Bremen is organizing a series of lectures on inclusive language in cooperation with the Senator for Science and Ports, the Language Center of the Universities in the Land of Bremen, the Sprachenrat Bremen, the Goethe Institut and the Institut Français.

Throughout the year, the Language Center of the Universities in the Land of Bremen (SZHB for short) offers students at all of Bremen's universities a rich and varied language learning program. To find out more, come attend our information sessions and trial courses during orientation week.

Courses in summer semester 2022
