The concept of multiplication represents a significant turning point in students’ learning—it is their first experience with mathematics that must be memorised, which can often provoke dislike and even fear.  In this talk, I will present a new approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics that moves beyond the additive approach of repeated addition and offers an embodied, gestural and visual way of experiencing multiplication through the use of a multi-touch technology called TouchTimes. Drawing on theories of embodied cognition, I will discuss some of the rationale for the design of TouchTimes. I will also provide initial results of our research with primary school children as well as practising teachers.
