Since the late 1990’s, the National Science Foundation in the United States has funded millions of dollars of grants in a program which has come to be known as “Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Mathematics” or “REU.” The size and scope of these summer programs varies widely. The final goal in some is for the students to produce research level mathematics. Many other are more focused on outreach and attempt to interest students from under-represented groups in continuing their education in mathematics to a Masters or Doctoral Degree. By almost any measure, these programs have been a huge success. I have been fortunate to obtain funding to run such programs at both Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas and my current institution Sam Houston State. In this talk I will discuss the techniques I used in handling students in these programs, as well as the type of mathematics on which their work was centered. Many of my past REU students published research level papers after their summer work, and I will reviews some of their better results.
