Ultra-High Vacuum Technologies for Experiments with Cold Atoms under Microgravity

For projects with cold atoms in space, ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems are one of the key technology for a successful mission. These experiments are currently carried out in the drop tower and on sounding rockets and in the future on-board of the International Space Station (ISS) or on a satellite. In contrast to ground based experiments, these space based experiments need to withstand the mechanical loads during all phases of the mission, including the launch, the flight and the landing. In the framework of these missions, experimental tests and simulation based (FEM Simulations) approaches are currently under investigation.

The project includes the following tasks:

Experimental part
- Experimental investigation of UHV seals under mechanical loads
- Determination of material and engineering data
- Experimental investigation of pretension force of screw connections

Simulation Part
- Optimization of current FEM Model
o Mesh, material model, etc
- Verification of FEM model with experimental data
- Optimization of a post processing of the FEM simulation results
- Implementation of a automated post processing for a leakage prediction for future design optimizations

This project involves conducting CFD simulations on the entire rocket body of Transcendence, across various flight regimes, altitudes and associated temperature and pressure settings. The performance of the rocket will be analyzed across different speeds: Subsonic (Mach 0-0.8), Transonic (Mach 0.8-1.2) and Supersonic (Mach 1.2-5) using Ansys Fluent solver.
Using CFD simulations, the following is to be examined:
1. Transcendence has a total drag impulse of less than 40 kN.
2. The centre of Pressure remains below the vehicle’s centre of mass through all Flight regimes.
3. The heat loads generated during ascent.
4. At the maximum dynamic pressure, Transcendence’s Fins generate a torque on the spacecraft such that a spin rate of 4 Hz is achieved.

Metallic glass (MG) is a non-crystalline material featuring the glass transition. This features outstanding strength but extremely limited plasticity. The synthesis of MGs usually requires high cooling rates, which can be readily achieved by laser powder based fusion (L-PBF). However, the formation of crystalline phase inside the glass matrix due to the thermal cycling during LPBF leads to a loss of their mechanical performance. In addition, high residual stresses provoke the formation of cracks leading to material failure. These phenomena require fundamental understanding. To provide an insight about the above-mentioned issues, this work will study the processing of a commercially available CuZr-based MG powder by L-PBF using simulation approach.
