PROMOS

Program for Increasing the Mobility of Students 2024

The DAAD sponsor program supports study-related stays abroad outside the Erasmus area with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Funding period: every year from January 1 to December 31.

For the stay in the host country, partial scholarships are awarded for a maximum of 3 months per study period (BA/MA). Travel expenses are not covered.

In addition to the regular three months per study period, a short-term measure can be supported, i.e. a language course or specialized course. In addition to the partial scholarships, flat-rate course fees of 500 euros may also be eligible for funding. A separate application must be submitted for a short-term measure.

Only students enrolled with the goal of achieving their degree at the University of Bremen are allowed to apply. Mobilities in the home country are excluded. Omitted are countries for which a travel warning has been issued by the German Foreign Office.

Students in a cooperative degree program are only eligible to apply if, according to the Office for Student Affairs, the administrative responsibility is officially at the University of Bremen at the time of application.

Doctoral students only may be eligible for support by partial scholarships for fulltime language course or subject-related course.

Students who have special needs due to a chronic illness or disability can contact the respective representatives personally.

The monthly funding for studies, thesis writing and internships amounts to 350 Euro, 450 Euro and in some countries up to 550 Euro.

Eligible countries

Most countries outside the Erasmus area are eligible.

Not eligible are, therefore, stays in Switzerland, EU countries including the EU overseas territories, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey. Visiting study stays in Great Britain continue to be funded by Erasmus.

Also excluded are countries for which a travel warning has been issued by the Federal Foreign Office. For students without German citizenship, measures in the home country are excluded.

PROMOS Report

Under the link PROMOS bewegt (daad.de) (in German only) you will find a report  which you accompanies the (fictitious) student Lea, who sets out to get to know PROMOS.

Along the way, she meets interesting people who, in video and audio formats, in texts and with pictures, tell how and why PROMOS has moved them.

  • Study Scholarships (1 to 3 months)
Full-time study stays and the writing of final theses are eligible for support. Doctoral candidates cannot apply under this program. It is also not possible to assume the cost of tuition fees. In the event that students are writing their final thesis at a university, no courses may be attended in the host country at the same time. If the theses are not embedded at universities or in companies, a detailed and binding work schedule must be included in the motivation letter.
  • Internships (1 to 3 months)
Full-time student internships are generally eligible for funding worldwide. Internships which fit into the separate DAAD funding lines cannot be funded under the PROMOS program. Only measures are supported for which there is no separate DAAD funding line (IAESTE, annual DAAD scholarships, etc.) (www.daad.de). By way of exception, internships can also be sponsored by PROMOS during the period between the Bachelor's degree and the start of the Master's program. However, the prerequisite is that there is proof of pre-admission to the Master’s or a similar connection to the German university.
  • Language courses (3 weeks to 3 months)
Full-time language courses for students and postgraduate students at public and private universities abroad can be funded with the one-off sum of 500 Euro, provided they consist of at least 25 hours per week.
Information about language courses at universities abroad can be found at www.daad.de
  • Subject-related courses (1 to 6 weeks)
The participation of students and doctoral students in subject-related courses (for example summer courses) offered by foreign universities can be subsidized in the amount of 500 Euro per person or a flat rate subsistence allowance.

Students with a disability (at least 50%) can apply for additional funding, if funds are used to compensate additional costs abroad.

PROMOS may be obtained for a maximum of 3 months per study period in the form of the partial scholarship plus a one-time course fee for an additional language or specialized course.

The PROMOS application and PROMOS funding must also be reported to all other scholarship donors.
Students applying for BAföG or other funding are also obliged to state this in their PROMOS application and at the BAföG office. If necessary, the International Bafögstelle will clear the bill.
DAAD individual scholarships and PROMOS scholarships may not be used at the same time.
Deutschlandstipendium and PROMOS can be obtained without restrictions at the same time.
In addition to PROMOS, scholarships may be obtained from other private scholarship donors, but not from other public funds.

Travel allowances are also possible from other public funds, as they are not taken over by PROMOS.

Applications can be submitted only once within the given deadline. Applications that are incomplete or submitted at a later date will not be considered.

Deadline for the submission of applications:

  • October 31 ("Halloween"), for students starting their stay abroad between January 1 and June 30 of the following academic year
  • February 28, for all students starting their stay abroad on or after July 1st

There are PROMOS-Coordinators in each department, to whom the applications have to be submitted through the online portal MobilityOnline.
Some PROMOS-Coordinators require your application additionally in a paper- or email-version. Please check with them early before deadline!

The list of PROMOS-Coordinators may be found in the download area.

Only full and timely applications will be accepted. Applicants always have to apply in their own department, even if exchange places from a different department are used.

You are only allowed to submit a single PROMOS application for each activity, always via your own main subject, even if you are taking an exchange position from a foreign department. To ensure equal opportunities, all double applications will be disqualified.
In the case of two main courses with the same title (two-subject Bachelor), the main subject is the one on the enrollment certificate.
Together with a jury, the PROMOS representatives prepare the nomination lists in the departments and forward them to the International Office. Accordingly, the International Office makes the scholarship allocations and sends the grants by e-mail to all scholarship recipients.

Please note that a complete application must be submitted for each action. Accordingly, two applications must be submitted if, for example, you wish to apply for a language course followed by an exchange semester.

Please find the link to the online applications portal which will be opened 4 weeks before the deadline on the right side "Access to the Application Portal Mobility Online"

In case of any technical issues with your online-application in the database, you may contact: studybremenprotect me ?!uni-bremenprotect me ?!.de

The most important selection criteria are:

  • Academic accomplishments (grade report)
  • Meaningfulness of the planned stay abroad
  • Foreign language skills

All applications must be submitted online and ALL required documents must be uploaded in the online portal before the deadline. Apart from submitting the application online, students may need to submit a hard copy or Email to the PROMOS-Coordinators if requested by the representative in their department.

When filling out the application form, please read all instructions carefully and thoroughly.

The application consists of the following documents:

  • Letter of motivation, maximum 2 pages
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Transcripts of academic records (for example PABO-/FlexNow)
  • Language certificate (minimum B2 in the language of instruction. You may get a language certificate at the SZHB)
  • Current enrolment certificate at University Bremen

All applicants have to check early before the application deadline with the Promos-Coordinator in the home department, if further documents are to be submitted and if they are additionnally required in paper or digital version.

Our form sheet "Preliminary Confirmation of Host Institution" must be submitted as soon as possible. It may be uploaded after the application, no later than four weeks before start of the official mobilty period.

In case of an internship abroad, any financial support and/or remuneration by the employer has to be stated.

After the application deadline, no change of project will be accepted. In case of change, the scholarship expires automatically immediately.

All scholarship grants for PROMOS will be made by the International Office in December and April.

The basis for this are the nominations of PROMOS representatives in the departments.

All students need a valid health insurance for the host country.
All students enrolled in the PROMOS grant have the opportunity to take out a DAAD group insurance. This is a foreign insurance that includes health, accident and personal liability insurance. Information can be obtained from the DAAD insurance office at www.daad.de/versicherung/en

Note
Support may only be granted if there is no travel warning from the Foreign Office for the host country or the relevant subregion (www.auswaertiges-amt.de). If a travel warning is issued after the start of the stay, all students must leave immediately and report this immediately to the International Office, the PROMOS representative and the host institution. The PROMOS grant cannot be continued thereafter. All students should in principle be registered on the website of the German Federal Foreign Office, especially when traveling to regions with a critical security situation ("Elektronische Erfassung von Deutschen im Ausland - Elefant").
