U Bremen Research Alliance (UBRA)

The University of Bremen and twelve institutes of non-university research funded by the federal states cooperate in the U Bremen Research Alliance. It comprises research institutes from the four major German scientific organisations, i.e. the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Max Planck Society, Leibniz Association and Helmholtz Association, as well as the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence.

The cooperation in the U Bremen Research Alliance extends across the four key scientific areas of "Marine, Polar and Climate Research", "Materials Sciences and Production Engineering", "Health Sciences" and "Minds, Media, Machines" and thus literally "From Deep Sea to Outer Space".

The aim of the U Bremen Research Alliance is to closely interlink the diverse, excellent research in Bremen - across institutional boundaries. With this in mind, the member institutions co-operate particularly closely and successfully in certain areas. The activities include the fields of research data and data science as well as artificial intelligence. The U Bremen Research Alliance Welcome Center supports international researchers and their families in planning and carrying out their stay in Bremen and Bremerhaven.
The Alliance also offers targeted assistance through seminars and training courses, for example in acquiring third-party funding.

In addition to the University of Bremen, the members of the U Bremen Research Alliance are

  • Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Center for Polar- and Marine Research (AWI)
  • German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence DFKI
