Despite controversial relevance and methodology, university rankings have now established themselves in Germany as well for several years. Rankings are employed to assess the quality of research and teaching at universities in the light of various indicators and establishing ranking lists with ranking positions or ranking groups.

For the quality assurance of these rankings, the International Ranking Expert Group (IREG) agreed in 2006 to the so-called Berlin Principles on Ranking of Higher Education Institutions. In 2015 the IREG also published the Guidelines for Stakeholders of Academic Rankings.

The University of Bremen is one of the leading research universities in Germany. This is also reflected in the successful applications in the Excellence Initiative. With regard to the rankings, the University of Bremen, only a medium-sized university (without medical faculties) also shows significant results in the national as well as the international Rankings.
