Bremen-Cardiff Alliance

  • Cardiff University und Universität Bremen

Cardiff University and University of Bremen

Cardiff University in Wales was ranked 5th amongst UK universities in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) based on quality, and is a member of the Russell Group, a group of 24 leading UK research intensive universities. It provides an educationally outstanding experience for its 31,500 students.

The University of Bremen has long-established research links with Cardiff University, including through the Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences (MARUM) and Cardiff’s School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, and the Fiction Meets Science group (FMS) in Bremen and the cross-disciplinary ScienceHumanities initiative at Cardiff University.

The Bremen-Cardiff Alliance reflects shared strategic priorities and, whilst open for all areas to develop new collaborations in, will initially focus on complementary research strengths in three specific areas: media and communication sciences; marine and environmental sciences; and literary, social and historical studies.

A unique aspect of the Bremen-Cardiff Alliance is the affiliation of academic staff members from one university to the other so as to enable staff to engage in long-term collaborative research activities on site, to supervise PhD students and apply for external funding through the respective national systems of the partner institution.

The Bremen-Cardiff Alliance includes a provision for staff and PhD student mobility through the establishment of a dedicated collaborative fund. The fund will be open for the development of joint research between the two institutions in all disciplines, as well as the mobility of teaching, technical and professional services staff to share best practice.
An Executive Committee oversees the partnership, made up of the Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor International & Europe of Cardiff University, the President and Vice-President International and Diversity of the University of Bremen, and two further members from each institution.
