The Foundation

On 31 March 2015, the non-profit Manfred and Ursula Fluß Foundation was established as a trust foundation under the umbrella of the University of Bremen Foundation. Its purpose is to promote science and research, in particular by supporting research and teaching at the University of Bremen as well as young academics.

The Board of Trustees decides on the use of the funds. It consists of

the founders, former senator Manfred Fluß and Ursula Fluß,
the Rector of the University of Bremen, Prof Dr Jutta Günther
    Christian Fluß
    Prof Dr Wilfried Müller

The Board of Trustees meets twice a year together with the committees of the University of Bremen Foundation. Decisions on applications for funding are made at the spring meeting.

Funding

Applications for funding are subject to the regulations of the University of Bremen Foundation:
Information on funding

In 2023, the Manfred and Ursula Fluß Foundation is funding the project "Resilience of Maritime Infrastructures" by Prof Dr Katharina Reiling.

Brief description of the project: Maritime infrastructures such as offshore wind turbines, submarine cables and seaports are essential for the functioning of the economy and the supply of society. The coronavirus pandemic and the war of aggression against Ukraine have recently highlighted the vulnerability of such infrastructures to crises. The sponsored anthology explores what constitutes the resilience of maritime infrastructures and how these challenges can be mastered legally.

The Founders

The donors Manfred and Ursula Fluß are long-standing supporters of the University of Bremen. The couple were already among the founding donors of the University of Bremen Foundation, which was established in 2012. It was therefore only logical that they should now go one step further and support the university in the long term with their own foundation - with their own trust foundation under the umbrella of the University of Bremen Foundation.

The founders feel connected to the University of Bremen in many ways. Manfred Fluß, former Senator of Finance and Member of the Bremen Parliament, has actively supported the University on its way from its beginnings to becoming a University of Excellence. By establishing this foundation, the founders are therefore also recognising the work of the two rectors, Prof. Dr Jürgen Timm and Prof. Dr Wilfried Müller, whose work has been instrumental in the development of the University of Bremen into a university of excellence.

Manfred Fluß was an honorary representative of the Planning Commission for Mathematics and Natural Sciences during the University's founding phase from 1969 to 1971. During his time as a member of the Bremen Parliament, Manfred Fluß was responsible for science and art for 26 years, including 17 years as deputation spokesman for the University of Bremen. He thus played a key political role in the developments of the 1980s and 1990s. From 1994 to 1995, Manfred Fluß was Senator for Finance.
Manfred Fluß has been Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nolting Hauff Foundation for the Promotion of the University of Bremen for 14 years. As a representative of the Senate, he has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Bremen Foundation since 2012 and has been an active member of the Rector's Circle, an advisory group to the respective Rector, for nine years.
