Dr. Paul Klar

Dr. Paul Klar has been a researcher within the Faculty of Geosciences at the University of Bremen since August 2022.

Mr. Klar, what are you currently working on?

My field of research involves determining crystal structures using electron diffraction (3D ED). Modern electron crystallography was only established in the past decade and is therefore a very young method. This is problematic on the one hand, since many of the experimental steps and the evaluation of said steps cannot be done at the push of a button. However, it is interesting to be part of developing these methods.

I use these methods to determine details in crystal structures of aluminosillicates, minerals, and organic compounds.

Why did you decide on a career path as a researcher?

The ticking clock of the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act was not at the forefront of my mind when my first postdoc contract expired. It was not until other researchers showed me how relevant this was for my career plans that I knew I would need to set the course accordingly.

Would you choose this career path again, and if so, why?

In my opinion, the creation of senior researcher positions is a big step in the right direction. Especially the “probationary” tenure track phase with the prospect of a subsequent permanent position makes this position attractive. In combination with the accompanying freedom in academic work and the support that allows for developing this potential, I would certainly apply for a researcher position with tenure track again.
