September Academy simplifies start of studies for Freshers

The University of Bremen's tuition-free September Academy makes it easier for freshers to get into the swing of things even before they start studying. Unlike the popular introductory events on offer during the orientation week, which concentrate on more formal aspects of studies, the focus of the September Academy lies in attractive introductory lectures designed to prepare freshers for the subject matter of the studies lying ahead of them. At the same time they are given an introduction into the methodology of their chosen field. For example: programming, film making, refreshing mathematical skills, working with archived material, outdoor research, implementation and evaluation of surveys, accounting, debating, laboratory experiments, and  making music. Between now and 10th September 2014, first-semester students of the University of Bremen can register for the Academy under www.uni-bremen.de/septemberakademie. The courses offered by the September Academy last between two and five days and take place from 15th September till 11th October.

“From Gravel to Continent – Experience Earth Science”, “The Archive a Laboratory – Working with World War I Sources”, “Regenerative Energies” – just three of the fourteen introductory lecture courses the University is offering to give first-semester students a leg-up at the start of their studies, and an insight into their chosen subjects. There is also a media-based search for clues entailing a video production on the topic “So Where's the Excellence?” And students in the Faculty of Human and Health Sciences will present the new students with some findings of their research-based studies. Almost all areas covered by the University's degree programs will be represented: Society and education, culture, media, art and music, human and health sciences, nature and environment, economy and law, as well as numbers, technology and industrial production. Under the motto “research-based learning from day one”, freshers will be given an attractive opportunity to gain insights into scientific methods – creating added self-confidence and a taste of the enjoyable period of studies ahead.
