University of Bremen Once Again in the “Top 50 under 50”

The University of Bremen once again occupies a high position in a worldwide ranking of young universities. In the ranking “QS Top 50 Under 50” it is on place 44 (2014: Place 45), putting it among the three very best young universities in Germany. this is the second time this year that the University of Bremen has had its leading international position confirmed in this way, the first time being in the ranking published by the British science magazine Times Higher Education (THE), where it occupied place 26 in the ranking “100 Under 50”.

The “QS Top 50 Under 50” ranking of universities founded from 1965 onwards is a special evaluation carried out by “QS World University Ranking” under the auspices of the firm QS Quacquarelli Symonds. This ranking is compiled to facilitate comparability and provide an assessment of how universities perform in the areas of education and research while taking an institution’s traditions into account. The Rector of the University of Bremen, Professor Bernd Scholz-Reiter, points out that: “The ranking of young universities shows that we are among the top academic addresses worldwide. This is all the more gratifying since the University of Bremen has managed to reach this position in spite of its acute lack of state funding and even though it has no medical faculty.”

The QS worldwide ranking of young universities takes into account an institution’s reputation in research, the quality of academic teaching, and internationality. The evaluation underlying the ranking is based on assessments by international scientific communities (40 %), the quality of teaching (20 %), number of citations (20 %), the reputation of its teaching staff (10 %), and the internationality of its student body and academics (5 % each).
