Visiting Lecturer Christiane Fellbaum

Prof. Christiane Fellbaum from Princeton University, New Jersey, USA, was visited the University of Bremen from 17th to 20th June 2013. She was invited to talk as a guest lecturer in the Creative Unit ‘Colonial Linguistics – Language in Colonial Contexts’ funded by the Excellence Initiative, where she spoke on the topics “Ontology, Lexicons, and Cognitive Sciences”.

Since November 2012 the Creative Unit entitled “Colonial Linguistics – Language in Colonial Contexts” has been carrying out research on the relationship between linguistic communication, linguistic description, and colonial structures of power.  The Unit is embedded in the University of Bremen’s Faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies. In a total of four sub-projects led by Prof. Thomas Stolz (Linguistics) and Prof. Ingo H. Warnke (German Linguistics), the Creative Unit is compiling a “Digital German Colonial Archive”, an “Annotated Full Bibliography of Linguistic Research in Colonial Times“, the “Edition of Archive Records on Linguistic Research in Colonial Times”, and a “Biobibliographical Dictionary of Linguistics research in Colonial Times”.

Professor Fellbaum is a Senior Research Scholar in the Department of Computer Science at Princeton University (USA), and a project leader at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. She is a recipient of the Wolfgang Paul Prize awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and co-founder of the lexical information system WordNet. Her main research interests lie in the mental lexicon, linguistic ontologies, idiomatic language and collocations. Besides participating in a PhD workshop and seminars in German Studies for Master students of Linguistics and Computer Science, Fellbaum delivered a public lecture on the topic “Are Computers Able to Learn the Meaning of Words?”
