Study Account Funding

On July 14th, 2020, the Bremen Parliament decided to repeal the Bremen Student Accounts Act with effect on 30.09.2020. Hence, the Bremen Student Accounts Act was applied for the last time in the summer semester 2020.

However, the University of Bremen has continued to have financial resources at its disposal in recent years thanks to compensation from the Senatorial Authority. You will find out  on this page to what extent the allocation procedure will also take place in the coming year 2024.

Distribution of funds

Fifty percent of the tuition fees are allocated to the subjects based on the number of students enrolled in a subject. This money is placed at the disposal of the Faculties to invest as they see fit. The other 50% flows via a central allocation procedure into interdisciplinary areas and measures as well as into the financing of teaching-relevant infrastructure. Students should decide on the use of these funds, either through their interest groups or as individual representatives.

Use of study account funds

Pursuant to the Studienkontengesetz (Study Accounts Act), the income from tuition fees is to be used to fund measures designed to improve teaching and learning. The principle “the money follows the students” applies. In procedures defined by the Academic Senate, specific measures are to be funded which improve the study situation of as many students as possible. Special consideration is given to the following target groups:

Target groups
  • Students in higher semesters
  • First year students
  • Students in their final phase of studies
  • International students
  • Students with children
