Nonverbal intertextuality in times of trauma: a cross-cultural investigation
Dr. Ahmed Elsayed (Prof. Dr. John A. Bateman, Faculty 10: Linguistics and Literary Studies)

Nonverbal intertextuality― i.e., how images draw upon, incorporate, recontextualize and dialogue with other images― is an important mechanism for working with visual ‘conventional’ units, such as ‘journey’ and ‘time’, that form a mainstay of many current models of interpretation. On the basis of previous work, the proposed project challenges the traditionally dominant view that the direction of writing in a language is the main predictor of how people organize time or affects their patterns of perceptual exploration, drawings, aesthetic preferences, and mental images of scenes. How cultures contrast in this respect is an important issue in its own right because of its potential benefit to intercultural communication and reducing misunderstandings.

Exploring the Political Agency of Male Sexual Violence Survivors in Northern Uganda
Dr. Philipp Schulz (Prof. Dr. Klaus Schlichte, Faculty 08: Social Sciences)

Wartime sexual violence against men occurs more frequently than popularly assumed, but remains notoriously under-explored and silenced. This project addresses this marginalization, by examining the lived experiences of male survivors of wartime sexual violence in Northern Uganda, with a focus on how survivors actively engage with their gendered vulnerabilities, thereby exercising myriad forms of political agency. The project serves as a pilot study for a larger follow-up project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), which explores these questions comparatively in Uganda and Sri Lanka.

3-Dimensional Interactive Psychoacoustic Auditory Display (3DAD) for Navigation
Dr. Phil. Tim Ziemer (Prof. M.D. Ron Kikinis, Faculty 03: Mathematics / Computer Science)
