Program-specific requirements

The B.A. programme Sociology provides students with an academic grounding for occupations in different areas of the labour market. Besides gaining specific sociological qualifications, students also train their intrapersonal and other non-curricular skills.
The course of studies offers students the possibility to acquire knowledge of the most important sociological theories and the fundamental cognitive knowledge of sociology, the foundations of social structure analysis as well as the methods of empirical social research and statistics. In addition to this students are given the opportunity to elect courses and individual specialisms dealing with specific sociological issues.

Students are free to choose a combination of courses which accords with their own individual preferences and career choice. They can choose between special area programmes, method practicals, modules belonging to other subjects of study, accompanying courses of study and work practicals.

Students on the B.A. course must undertake a minimum eight-week internship or work practical, preferably in the periods between their 2nd and 5th semester.

Students are recommended to participate in a stay abroad.

Besides working in universities, graduates of sociology find career opportunities in a number of very different fields of practice in non-university research, (further) education, the public sector, lobby groups, trade associations and political parties, in the media and in the area of culture, in private enterprises, welfare institutions and in national as well as international non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Typical activities carried out by sociologists within these occupational fields include:
1. Research (fundamental and applied research, including accompanying and evaluating research, market research, opinion surveys, and benchmarking);
2. The cognition and imparting of knowledge (adult education, documentation and reportage, journalism);
3. The application of knowledge: consultation and planning for social systems (staff positions in organisations of the economy, public administration and in state welfare institutions) freelance occupations, self-employed planning, the management of social processes and HR management in various organisations.
