Basic idea:
Design of high performance gas turbines is a key technology in modern industry due to its significant application in aircraft, electrical generators, ships, etc. Understanding the turbulent flow in the compressor cascade is particularly important since the strong turbulence in this section leads to significant irreversible losses. Through the master project, the students will learn how to simulate the flows in a compressor cascade and how the irreversible losses are interrelated with the turbulent flows.

Description of the project:
The turbulent flow in a gas turbine compressor cascade will be simulated by using a large eddy simulation (LES) or Reynolds-averaged Navier stokes simulation (RANS) method. The solver for the numerical simulation will be developed based on the open source CFD package OpenFoam 18.06. A 2-dimenssional compressor blade cascade will be accounted for in the study. The numerical results will be validated by the experimental data. The effects of turbulence model and numerical scheme on the numerical results will be investigated.


We search for 3-6 students who:
• are interested in CFD simulations;
• are capable of team work;
• have knowledge of fluid mechanics.


We may offer:
• supervision of CFD simulation;
• training of using the CFD package OpenFoam;
• introduction of principle knowledge about gas turbine and simulation of turbulent flows;
• access to the computer cluster for middle-scale parallel computations.
