Open for unconventional approaches in research and education. This is what the University of Bremen always stood for since its foundation 50 years ago. The university’s profile was built on a broad spectrum of subjects, which are preserved in their diversity so that new links and research questions can emerge. This leads to top-level research, both in interdisciplinary research networks and in an individual manner. The teaching profile of the university is consistently oriented towards research-based learning. Our Bremen spirit could be found in the support of new ideas and changes, a cooperative community, respect and appreciation for each other and flat hierarchies.

With our research and education profile, the University of Bremen is taking responsibilities in the region, the continent and the world. The UN Sustainable Development Goals and climate justice in research and education are main focuses. Approximately 23,000 people are studying, teaching, researching and working on our international campus. As a leading European research university and part of the European university network YUFE–Young Universities for the Future of Europe- it is developing a new model for European higher education together with nine other universities.

In Faculty 2 (Biology/Chemistry) the following position in Chemistry is to be filled at the earliest possible date:

Professorship (f/m/d)

in Sustainable Organic Chemistry

grade W2 in a civil servant relationship for life (if the requirements under civil service law are met).

Job description

The holder of the position in tuture should represent the field of Sustainable Organic Chemistry in research and teaching.

We are looking for an individual person with a strong profile in organic preparative chemistry. Your focus should be on the development and implementation of sustainable synthesis methods, whereby innovative catalytic processes for resource efficiency and reagent-saving reaction technologies such as photochemistry, electrosynthesis and flow methods are of particular interest. In addition, knowledge in the synthesis of important active ingredients and natural products as well as in the production of small molecules that contribute to the mechanistic understanding of biological systems is desirable. Close cooperation and networking with the working groups active in Faculty 2 and the scientific focal points (marine, polar and climate research, minds, media, machines) of the University of Bremen as well as the willingness to actively participate in the acquisition of joint projects is desirable.

We look forward to your dedicated commitment to teaching, particularly in the Bachelor's degree program in Chemistry (full subject and teaching degree) and in the Master's degree programs in Chemistry and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB). You will be expected to innovatively develop the courses offered within the framework of research-based learning, to undergo further didactic training and to supervise Bachelor's and Master's students in the subjects mentioned.

If these are your topics, then you've come to the right place.

Requirements

If you do not yet have sufficient language skills for teaching on the German-language Bachelor's degree course, we would like you to have acquired these within 2 years and will be happy to support you.

In addition to outstanding scientific qualifications in the field of preparative organic chemistry, proven by high-quality publications, initial successful acquisition of third-party funding and experience in teaching and promoting young researchers, the appointment procedure should identify candidates who have been involved in the overall context of sustainable developments in the organic chemistry context. Competencies with regard to the consideration of gender and diversity dimensions in research and teaching are desirable.

The prerequisites for appointment are a university degree in chemistry or related subjects, a very good doctorate, a habilitation or equivalent, teaching experience and didactic aptitude. The appointment is made on the basis of § 18 BremHG and § 116 BremBG.

General hints

The University of Bremen is discrimination-sensitive, diverse and family-friendly. It offers a wide range of services to support newly appointed staff, such as the Welcome Center, childcare and the Dual Career Program, supplemented by staff development and continuing education programs. It is committed to implementing the diversity strategy at all levels. We intend to increase the proportion of women in the academic field and in top positions and therefore expressly encourage female academics to apply. We also particularly welcome international applications and applications from people with a migration background. Severely disabled applicants with essentially equal professional and personal qualifications will be given priority.

Please send us your application with CV, certificates, list of publications, overview of projects and third-party funding, proof of teaching experience and planned research activities. We are also interested in your concepts for the development and integration of your research at Faculty 2, the forms of teaching and learning you would like to use and how you would like to promote diversity in teaching, research and the promotion of young academics.

Please send your application by May 3rd, 2024 quoting the reference number P713 /24, to:
