Job description

The Department of Communication Engineering has many years of expertise in the research and development of communications systems, algorithms and signal processing methods. Through participation in programs of the German Research Foundation (DFG), cooperative projects of the European Union (EU), European Space Agency (ESA), and German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as well as industrial projects, the results of basic research find direct utilization in the development and standardization of mobile radio systems, industrial radio systems and space communication systems.

Description

The tasks include carrying out independent research in the following areas:

  • Build and commission a 3D network testbed with base stations, rovers, drones and satellite communications to explore 6G networks.
  • Real-time software implementation of 6G baseband technologies for use with software defined radios (SDRs, e.g., Ettus N310)
  • Familiarization with and commissioning of an open 5G software implementation (e.g. SRS RAN and Open5Gc)
  • Integration of accelerators into a real-time capable 5G implementation
  • In addition to research, the area of responsibility from the winter semester 2025/2026 also includes participation in teaching tasks (teaching obligation - 4 SWS), including carrying out exercises accompanying lectures, supervising project and final theses and internships.

Requirements

  • Very good M.Sc. degree in in communications engineering/information technology, technical computer science, applied mathematics or related engineering or natural sciences
  • Very good knowledge of software implementation of algorithms
  • Profound knowledge that covers one or more of the following areas: communications engineering (baseband, resource management), signal processing and signal theory, coding and information theory, network information theory, machine learning, stochastic inference techniques
  • Strong interested in conducting independent research with your ideas and approaches as a member of one of our research teams
  • High motivation to work within trans-disciplinary research projects
  • Organizational talent and team spirit
  • Very good English skills, ideally basic German skills
  • Ideally, experience in programming/development environments (Python/MATLAB/C++)
  • Ideally, experience with software defined radios (Ettus URSP) and GNU radio
  • We are looking for candidates carrying out at least one of the following activities
  • Software implementation of innovative technologies, e.g. in an 6G testbed
