Data management in the collaborative research center TRR 172 - (AC)³

Job description

Within the collaborative research center TRR 172 (AC)³ a large number of important datasets are collected and used to investigate why temperatures in the Arctic are rising much faster than the global mean. In the sub-project INF we support our partners at the universities of Bremen, Leipzig and Cologne and the institutes TROPOS and AWI during the whole research data life cycle from collection to publication and re-use of data from the Earth system sciences.

The main part of the work focuses on improving, implementing and then evaluation of the optimal data management-strategies for the different research fields within the project.  The results are to be shared, published and discussed with the national and international RDM-Community.

The successful candidate will additionally coordinate between the project partners and data repositories (most importantly PANGAEA), support and educate the partners in selecting appropriate formats and metadata standards and perform the monitoring and quality control of data sets prepared for and used in publications according to our data policy. This task includes administration tasks of our web-based file sharing server.

In addition, the candidate will give training courses on data management and related topics to the project partners especially targeting the PhD students of the integrated research training group of (AC)³.

The developed best practices and experiences will be published and shared with the research data management community.

Requirements

  • A university degree (Master/Uni-Diploma) in a field related to the Earth system sciences
  • Good programming skills in at least one high-level programming language (preferably Python)
  • Experience in the analysis and publication of research data and/or model simulations, preferably from the Earth system sciences
  • Experience in web programming, automation and/or server administration
  • Experience working with version control systems (e.g. Git)
  • Experience in working with large data sets and data science techniques
  • Good communication skills and interest in communication, due to cooperation with project partners and lecturing training courses
  • Good knowledge of the English language.

General hints

Open to unconventional approaches in research and teaching, the University of Bremen has retained its character as a place of short distances for people and ideas since its founding in 1971. With a broad range of subjects, we combine exceptional performance and innovative potential. As an ambitious research university, we stand for research-based learning approaches and a pronounced interdisciplinary orientation. We actively pursue international scientific cooperation in a spirit of global partnership.

Today, around 23,000 people learn, teach, research and work on our international campus. In research and teaching, administration and operations, we are firmly committed to the goals of sustainability, climate justice and climate neutrality. Our Bremen spirit is expressed in the courage to dare new things, in supportive cooperation, in respect and appreciation for each other. With our study and research profile and as part of the European YUFE network, we assume social responsibility in the region, in Europe and in the world.

The Institute for Environmental Physics offers a very good working atmosphere, direct involvement in international research and attractive facilities.
The university is family-friendly, diverse and sees itself as an international university. We therefore welcome all applicants regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion/belief, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity.

As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply.

Disabled applicants will be given priority if their professional and personal qualifications are essentially the same.
