CHE Ranking Confirms Excellence of Research

The University of Bremen continues to excel in the acquisition of external funding. Especially in the fields of Political Science and the Social Sciences, the University enjoys a particularly high reputation, attracting considerable sums of funding from external sources. This is shown by rankings recently published by the Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung (CHE) and DIE ZEIT newspaper.

The latest CHE rankings evaluated the disciplines of Law, Business Administration, Political Science, the Social Sciences and Engineering Management. Degree courses in Law and Business Administration at the University of Bremen also head the field in Germany when it comes to the acquisition of third-party funds. “This ranking is yet another illustration of the outstanding research potential of our University”, stresses Professor Rolf Drechsler, Vice President for Research and Young Academics at the University of Bremen. “I am particularly pleased that the research work carried out by our political and social scientists is seen to be receiving due acclaim and recognition.”

However, the good rankings should not detract from the problems the University of Bremen is facing mainly as result of insufficient state-side funding. The overall situation of university studies continues to be cause for concern – and in another area of evaluation, that of international orientation, a lot remains to be done. “We are of course acutely aware of the difficulties caused by underfunding in the area of teaching. But in the long run a university’s strength in research is also reflected in its teaching”, Drechsler points out.
