New App Makes Campus Life Easier

Want to use your smartphone to explore the campus, or have a look at what’s on the dining hall menu? These and many other functions are now possible with the introduction of the new eStudentLBS App developed as part of an undergraduate project at the University of Bremen called “eStudent”. Twenty Bachelor students from the Faculty of Mathematics/Computer Science led by Prof. Gerrit Kalkbrenner are involved in the project. To date they have worked on a total of five new campus services. They include, for example, an Android app for Stud.IP and “eStudentLBS”. Connected to a site plan of the University, the “eStudentLBS” app developed by Björn Ahlfeld, Benjamin Kaufmann and Dennis Schlobohm provides a user-friendly campus overview.

“We noticed that there had until now been no easy way to explore the campus using a smartphone, and we wanted to close this gap”, explains Björn Ahlfeld, a student of Computer Science. From students, for students – the new app links up different campus services, providing an application for mobile devices like smartphones and Android tablets.

“eStudent LBS” is this first service of its kind at the University with the goal of making student life a little easier around the campus. Freshmen, in particular, will welcome the initiative, which will help them find their way around their new environment. The app is also particularly useful for students with disabilities as it lowers their mobility barrier, for instance by locating wheelchair-accessible entrances to building and facilities. The new features include:

•    Information on the different campus buildings
•    Bus and street-car schedules with notification of possible delays
•    A filter function to blend out certain categories of buildings
•    Details of menus served in the main dining hall and the GW2 building

The app will also be a topic in a Master project starting this winter semester, so rest assured that it will be developed even further.
