On Tuesday and Wednesday 16th and 17th November, Bremen University’s Research Academy ProUB officially opened its doors, kicking off with an intensive two-day program. On Tuesday, Professor Rolf Drechsler, Vice President for Research and Young Researchers, and Dr. Klaus Vosgerau, Director of the new Research Academy, held opening talks in which they described ProUB’s goals, tasks and spectrum of services.
Bremen’s Senator for Education and Science, Renate Jürgens-Pieper, was among those present. In her opening address she pointed out that the establishment of the Research Academy constitutes an important component of the University’s application within the context of the Excellence Initiative and altogether for its future development: “The new Research Academy provides us with the means to build further on existing levels of excellence.“ Shortly beforehand, Professor Drechsler voiced his opinion that ProUB represents “a clear commitment to being a research university “.
The opening program on Tuesday went on to include a number of specialist presentations and panel discussions. In an adjacent area, the various doctoral programs hosted by the University were presented at an in-house exhibition. On Wednesday, several well-known Bremen professors reflected on the highlights of their careers and spoke about the impact gaining their doctorate had had on their life course. Parallel to this, students and graduates of the University attended a workshop entitled “Pathways in Research – Doctoral Studies“ as an orientation to starting out on research careers.
The Research Academy at the University of Bremen will act as a central provider of services in support of doctoral studies and students. Supervisors will also be able to take advantage of its advisory services, and innovative forms of doctoral studies can receive support. Among the new bureau’s tasks is to organize programs of cross-disciplinary events in cooperation with other University facilities and to foster networking among doctoral students. German and international students will be able to find out about scholarships, doctoral programs, and everything else they need to know about gaining their doctorate. ProUB will coordinate its work in collaboration with the University’s research institutions.
