September Academy Gives Freshers A Good Start

The cost-free September Academy offered by the University of Bremen helps “freshers” get off to a good start to their studies. The Academy gives them an introduction into what university studies are like. You’ll find everything you need to know about the offer and how to register under www.uni-bremen.de/septemberakademie.

The September Academy covers all fields of study offered at the University of Bremen: Society and education, culture, media, art and music, life sciences and health, nature and environment, languages and literature studies, economics and law, statistics, engineering and production, and teacher training. New in this year’s program is a special preparatory course in mathematics for students of education training to teach at elementary school level.

Part of the program gives freshers an introduction to some of the methods used in their chosen fields: for example, programming, producing video clips, brush-up mathematics, working with archived material, field studies, compiling and assessing questionnaires, accounting, laboratory experiments, and legal practice. If you are starting your studies at the University of Bremen in the approaching winter semester and interested in attending the September Academy, you can register any time from now and September 11, 2015 under www.uni-bremen.de/septemberakademie. The courses offered by the September Academy can last anything from half a day up to four weeks. They will take place from September 14 to October 23, 2015.

“From shingle to continent – Introduction to Geoscience”, “Archives – A journey of discovery into the past – Working with archived material on deportation during the Weimar Republic”, “Europe makes history – Project work with excursions to the Museum of the 1950s in Bremerhaven”, “Study philosophy – practice philosophy yourself”, “Regenerative energies” – these are just five of the nineteen courses offered for freshers to give them initial insights into some of the current and attention-grabbing research topics in the chosen fields of study. Another innovative offer is participation in some media detective work involving a video production by art students on the topic “We are the elite! – Or perhaps not after all?”

The Faculty of Linguistics and Literature Studies will be offering an introduction to linguistics studies with the title “Around the world in 80 languages”. And in the workshop “Fancy a read”, participants will find out about reading strategies for dealing with the basic and secondary literature they will need for their university studies.
