Theater Where the Sparks Fly

Funkenschlag” [flying sparks]  – is the title of the event taking place in Bremen between the 21st and 25th  September which will draw representatives from art, culture, education and research from all over Germany. The event is the result of a cooperation project between the International Festival for Young Theater “Explosive!” of the Schlachthof Culture Center, klangpol, Katrin Rabus Kulturprojekte and the Bremen Haus der Wissenschaft. The main topics on the agenda are “Career and Economy”, “School and University”, “Health”, “Interculturality” and “Machine and Media”. The aim of this very special theater event is to break out of the art ghetto and explore new ways of experiencing theater.

The experimentation with new forms of theater is intended to foster exchange with an active participatory audience. By means of their context- and dialogue-oriented approach to theater and performance, the participating actors and actresses present their work on the basis of comparative reports and work demonstrations. Members of the audience are invited to join in the discussion with their own proposals and ideas. Another main feature is the possibility to network and explore possibilities for cooperation between the participating actors and actresses.

Beside members of the Center for Performance Studies at the University of Bremen, many other guests representing the areas of education, pedagogy, and art have been invited to attend. Among them is Johannes Beck, educational researcher and previously co-editor of the Rowohlt series “Kulturen und Ideen”, as well as co-founder of the Theater der Versammlung and director and theater educator Katrin Bretschneider.

The “Funkenschlag” event is taking place at the University of Bremen, in Haus der Wissenschaft, in the Schlachthof Culture Center, and in the Katrin Rabus Gallery. The meeting was prepared within the context of the interdisciplinary colloquium “KOPFSPRÜNGE. Aufführungen und Performance-Theorien zwischen Bildung, Wissenschaft und Kunst” organized by the Center for Performance Studies at the University of Bremen.
