University of Bremen Inaugurates Green IT Housing Center

The University of Bremen has just inaugurated a new Green IT Housing Center with a surface area of 570 square meters. The centre is a forerunner on the German university landscape. What’s so special? In future the University’s computing capacity will be concentrated in one ultra-modern building on the campus. Up to now the University’s IT infrastructure and that of the extra-mural research institutes was spread over several different locations. This concentration of computing capacity and a sophisticated climate control system is expected to result in annual savings in the region of some 3.6 million kilowatt hours – and a reduction  in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in excess of 2,000 tons.

The project cost a total of 5 million euros. The State of Bremen contributed 3.5 million from a special program for the modernization of administrative infrastructures, and 1.5 million euros came from the Ministry for the Environment within the context of the Environmental Innovation Program. The Green IT Housing Centre was completed within the planned two-year period and budgeting parameters. It has been calculated that the future reduction in energy costs will amortize the investment within four years.

One Housing Center for all Bremen science needs

Although the Green IT Housing Center is located on the University campus, it can be used by all manner of work groups and other institutions. IT operators will not only benefit from the resources made available, but also from the exceptionally high safety standards like fire protection, for instance.

Dr. Martin Mehrtens, Head of Finances and Administration, presents the Green IT Housing Center in a new clip produced by the University’s Press Office.
