University of Bremen Welcomes its New Students

Around 5,000 new students will take up studies at the University of Bremen in the approaching winter semester 2013/14. In the interest of getting off to a smooth start, the traditional freshers' week, or O-Woche will take place from 7th till 11th October 2013. Once again, the University is putting on a festive welcoming event for all new students and their families. This will take place on Wednesday 30th October 2013, in the Theater am Goetheplatz (Ostertorsteinweg). Under the motto “Extreme. Exclusive. Excellent”, guests will be treated to an interesting and varied stage show all about studying at the University of Bremen. Following this, there will be ample opportunity for entertainment and dancing at an “after-show party” held in the Lagerhaus (Schildstraße 12-19, 28203 Bremen). Entry is 2 Euros for the welcome event and 4 Euros for the after-show party: Throughout freshers' week you will be able to purchase the tickets for a combined price of €5 in the main dining hall (Mensa).

About 25% of the 5,000 new students are enrolled on Master’s programs, and 75% are studying for Bachelor or Law degrees. For more than half of all the first-semester students – about 25% of all new students – this will be their first experience of studying at a university.

Information, contacts and “Fresher Party” during freshers' week

The freshers' week kicks off on Monday 7th October with introductory events in the different Faculties. The individual departments will provide information on curricular and organizational matters. Members of faculty and senior students will be on hand to answer questions and show visitors around. The Studiengangsausschüsse (Stugen) – student representative committees in the departments – are organizing a “Fresher Party” for all newcomers.

Prep courses and campus tours

Prior to the freshers' week, some departments are offering prep courses to facilitate a smooth start to studies. The Allgemeiner Studierendenausschuss, or AStA – an elected student body similar to a student union – and a number of different student groups will be organizing their own introductory events. And the “AG Handicap” group will be on hand to provide a special tour of the campus for students with disabilities.

Information exchange on 10th October

Any questions freshers may still have can be answered at an “information exchange” that will take place on Thursday 10th October 2013. Beside representatives of the departments, some important university institutions will be on hand to talk to students at info booths in the GW2 building from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m.. Among those represented will be the Career Center, the Center for Foreign Languages, the International Office, the Student Workshop and the Student Advisory Service. Cross-departmental events offer information on topics like studying abroad, General Studies, University Sport, and “Stud.IP”.
