University Street Car on Its Way to Excellence

"40 Years University of Bremen – On Its Way to Excellence!” – that is the new slogan (in German) which will adorn a BSAG street car on line 6. It will ply between the airport and the University for a year. Background is the 40th anniversary of the founding of the University in  1971. It is also to celebrate the University’s entry into the final round of the Excellence Initiative launched by the German Government and the Länder. The project is supported by the Wolfgang Ritter Foundation, the Stiftung Bremer Wertpapierbörse and the business development agency Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen.

The start of the “University street car” also heralds in the final phase of the University of Bremen’s application within the Excellence Initiative. “We are now entering the final straights on track for excellence”, says the University President, Professor Wilfried Müller. “The steet-car banner will draw the attention of the citizens of Bremen and visitors from abroad to the success story of Bremen as a science location. The “University street car” is an invitation for everyone to travel with us on our way to excellence.”

As a reminder: The University of Bremen has a chance to be acclaimed a “University of Excellence”. With its draft proposal of an Institutional Strategy entitled “Ambitious and Agile”, the University achieved success early this year in the preliminary round of the 2nd phase of the Excellence Initiative – together with six other universities from a total of 22 contestants. The objective of this competitive procedure is to crown the best research universities in Germany. The University of Bremen is the only university in North West Germany to have made it to the final selection round. It now has a very good chance of being awarded the title “University of Excellence” and up to fifty million Euros of funding over a five-year period. The final application must be submitted by 1st September 2011. In a subsequent procedure, the University will be evaluated by panels of international experts. The results will not be made known until June 2012.

The 40th anniversary: The University of Bremen opened its doors in winter semester 1971/72. All the events connected with this milestone anniversary will take place in the coming winter semester.
