Report SynBio Conference 2018

The SynBio conference was proposed as an attempt to expand the potential of one of the modules of the BMB program. Previously carried out as a monologue between a student and the professors, the module withheld what it was intended to deliver. Thus, the professors and students of the program conferred and agreed to conduct the conference to see if the consequences were fruitful in any manner.

Since the concept was novel and the organizing committee lacked a blueprint, the event had to put together piece by piece with a bottom-up approach.

The conference was open to not only the currently and previously enrolled students of the program, but also to the members of the other departments at the university. Professors and students of the institutes affiliated to the university were invited as well.

The main guests of the event were Dr Klaus Kruttwig from Leibniz Institute of New Materials and Dr Rahmi Lale from NTNU, Norway. Dr Lale works on bacterial transcriptional and translational regulation, biological tool development, and synthetic biology wherein he integrates recent techniques such as microfluidics with conventional scientific concepts.

Dr Kruttwig’s lab is re-discovering adhesive properties of substances and develops on the participating cellular and structural interactions for the benefit of the healthcare industry.

With the guidance of the BMB faculty and the immensely supportive administration of the university, the students were able to not only advertise the event through a myriad of media but also execute their ideas to their satisfaction.

The conference was lauded by the attendees and the participants’ talks were appreciated greatly.

We hope to make this an annual endeavour and integrate into the curriculum of the program.

I greatly enjoyed the conference. It was an exciting event where engaged Master's students presented their research proposals, which they constructed themselves and fine-tuned with their supervisors, to an audience, consisting of Faculty members, fellow students and guests.

What struck me most was the performance of the Master's students and the scientific level of discussions, which were both at high level, certainly beyond what I would have expected from Master's level students.

As a guest I was also humbled by the hospitality of the organising committee. All in all it was a truly enjoyable experience. I would congratulate both the students and the Faculty members for investing time and energy in organising and hosting such an worthy event.

Synthetic Biology

Turning Science Fiction to Reality

A conference cum symposium organized by the members of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program on the 11th and 12th of October. The students of the program will present projects on Synthetic Biology, as a part of their curriculum. The projects are open for discussion and debate to the audience. Additionally, there will be a talk by a guest speaker on both days. With this event, we intend to widen our horizons as scientists and provide a platform for the diverse research groups of the university to come together.
