Film Studies with a focus on the Aesthetics and History of Film


Subject to confirmation of job vacancy, the successful candidate will be expected to start on 01.04.2019,

The position (salary group 14 TV-L) is offered for an initial fixed-term of four years. Subject to a positive interim evaluation encompassing aptitude, performance and capability, the position can be transferred to that of Senior Researcher with tenure (salary group 15 TV-L). The research and academic teaching tasks are to be performed independently within the framework of the Bremen Higher Education Act (paragraph 24). The teaching load amounts to four hours in the function as Researcher and nine hours in the function as Senior Researcher.

We are looking for an early career researcher with the potential to develop an international research profile in the field of film studies. Applicants should have a focus on the aesthetics and history of film. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the research focus Media Change embedded in the Faculty of Cultural Studies, the acquisition of third-party funding, and interdisciplinary research cooperation at the Center for Media, Communication, and Information Research (ZeMKI). The holder of the position will teach in the degree programs offered by the Institute for Art History - Film Studies - Art Education (IKIFK). Participation in expanding measures of doctoral training is a prerequisite.


Your duties involve:

  • Consolidation and further development of the research profile "Aesthetics and History of Film" from a cultural and media studies perspective.
  • Development of a research approach that reflects the change in the subject of film in the course of digitization and globalization.
  • Development and deepening of research cooperations with film archives
  • Further development of the internationally oriented Open Access publication strategy pursued by the discipline
  • Independent implementation of academic teaching in the field of film studies in its historical, systematic and artistic breadth, including its cultural production and conditions of appropriation
  • A grounded theoretical approach to teaching with cultural and media studies orientation, which understands film as a specific aesthetic artifact and reflects its change in the context of digitization and globalization.
  • Acting as an examiner, in particular the supervision of BA and MA theses undertaken in the frame of the Department's study programs
  • Participation in the development of new study programs, as well as in the internationalization of the range of course offerings
  • Participation in counseling and mentoring students
  • Participation in university committees

Your qualifications (hiring requirements):


  • A completed academic degree in film studies or media science with a focus on film (Master's or comparable)
  • An outstanding doctorate of recent date in the field
  • Initial further academic achievements that point to an international research profile (e.g. publications in subject-related journals, conference lectures or cooperation with international film archives)
  • Pedagogical aptitude
  • Teaching experience in the field at a university or other higher education institution


The following would also be an advantage:

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Mastery of contemporary media and forms of presentation in teaching
  • Willingness to teach in German and English

Language skills (English and/or German) can be deepened during the first four years.
