Dr. Thomas Grunau

Dr. Thomas Grunau has been a researcher in the field of elementary and primary school education (Faculty of Education and Educational Sciences) at the University of Bremen since September 2023.

Mr. Grunau, what are you currently working on?

I am currently working on an economically informed theory of (early) childhood. Specifically, the project, which comprises several sub-areas, aims to describe and connect markets of supervision, education, consumption, and leisure.

Why did you decide on a career path as a (senior) researcher / lecturer?

The position as a researcher with tenure track to senior researcher at the University of Bremen is particularly attractive to me for three reasons. Firstly, this innovative position offers a very good opportunity to combine family and work, or rather offers a dual career service. The prospect of a permanent position depending on performance also contributes to this. Secondly, tenure track is an arrangement between a faculty and a researcher that provides both sides with a reliable basis on which mutual expectations can be established and made transparent. Finally, in my case, the position of (senior) researcher is an outstanding opportunity to play a decisive role in shaping the field of primary education research and teaching.

Would you choose this career path again, and if so, why?

It is still too early to say in my case, as I have only been employed as a researcher for a short time. However, based on my initial experiences, I couldn't imagine a better career model for me at the moment.
