Prof. Dr. Kerstin Brandes – Faculty of Cultural Studies

Since April, Kerstin Brandes has held the position of professor of visual culture at the Institute for Art History – Film Studies – Art Education. She previously filled in for this professorship. Kerstin Brandes studied art and English in Oldenburg and Leeds.

She completed her doctoral studies on the topic of photography and identity construction in artistic works of the 1980s and 1990s. Between 2014 and 2020, she was a temporary professor of theory and history of contemporary media and professor of art history at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. Furthermore, she was the director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Women- and Gender Studies (ZFG). Her works focusses on the interdependencies between art studies and media studies, history and theories of photography, image migration and transculturality, postcolonial studies, cultural gender / queer studies, cultural animal studies.
