Official Start of the Pi3 Research Training Group

Mathematics is a universal language. No other science is quite so capable of making complex issues manageable by breaking things down to the essentials. No end of scientific, engineering, industrial and economic applications/functions and even life’s problem issues can be illuminated on the abstract level of math-based simulations. A recently held launching event at the University of Bremen marked the official start of a new international Research Training Group embedded in the Center for Industrial Mathematics (ZeTeM) with the title “Parameter Identification: Analysis, Algorithms, Applications (Pi³)”. Back in May 2016, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) [German Research Foundation] agreed to fund the new group led by Professor Peter Maaß with almost 4 million euro spread over four and a half years.

Ph.D. students develop new procedures for research and industry

The Research Training Groups kicks off with 21 international Ph.D. students. Within the guiding principles of highly specialist mathematical training and early academic independence, they will acquire the skill sets required both for careers in scientific research as well as non-academic career fields. Their work will focus on the development of new procedures directed, for example, towards optimization of carburetor systems in automobile manufacturing, analysis of metabolite structures obtained from spectrometric data, and the optical analysis of fiber structures. The first cohort of Ph.D. students is expected to complete their doctoral research projects within the next two or three years.

Focus of research in the Research Training Group Pi³

Research in Pi³ will focus on determining parameters in various sub-disciplines of mathematics and industrial applications. There will be a special focus on developing models that are not yet fully understood and whose parameters first have to be determined from measured or otherwise obtained data. “The characteristics of such models make the determination of their parameters a particularly challenging undertaking and calls for highly sophisticated interdisciplinary approaches”, says the group’s leader, Professor Peter Maaß.

The Center for Industrial Mathematics (ZeTeM)

The Center for Industrial Mathematics (ZeTeM) is a mathematics research center specialized on applications in engineering and life sciences. Using modern methods of applied mathematics, its members tackle the entire problem-solving process – from modeling and mathematical analysis, up to the development of software and simulations. The research conducted by ZeTeM is strongly linked to collaboration projects with partners in science and the economy, which provides students with many interesting opportunities to gain first-hand experience.
