Lead: Prof. Dr. Karsten D. Wolf

ZeMKI Lab "Media Education and Educational Media"

Funded by the German Federal Ministery of Education and Research (BMBF)

Duration: 2016 - 2019

At nursing schools, learning using digital media is now widespread, and schools also have a wide range of eLearning materials at their disposal. However, the potential of eLearning is far from being fully exploited. Teaching/learning courses have so far been largely static, they are not integrated systematically but only selectively into nursing instruction, and even web-based learning has hardly been used to date, although it would be particularly useful to link learning at learning locations in practice and at school, for example, and to support virtual communication within the student group.

The aim of the project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the European Social Fund of the European Union (ESF), is to develop, implement and evaluate an innovative, computer-supported, case-based, multimedia and cooperative learning environment for nursing training at the interface between theoretical and practical/company training. In the long term, the project will contribute to increasing the attractiveness of nursing training and enhancing its value. By anchoring digital learning in nursing education, the media competence of teachers and learners will be improved.

Three concrete case situations which are problematic in everyday nursing work, e.g. for the care of people with dementia or pain, are presented on film in various variants and sequences. They form the basis for the development of three multimedia teaching/learning modules based on nursing and media didactics, which are implemented and evaluated in the cooperating nursing schools and facilities. In nursing didactics, the project is based on interactive nursing didactics. What is new here is that the media of photography and film are used to promote hermeneutic and reflexive skills.
In addition, a computer-supported, multimedia learning environment adapted to the needs of learners and teachers will be designed for nursing training and made usable as part of a classroom management system. The CARO learning environment enables students to work independently on learning assignments using APP - regardless of the learning location - and to exchange information virtually within their learning group. On the other hand, it offers teachers the opportunity to design teaching and self-learning at the workplace or at home in a didactic and methodical manner and to adapt the modular learning content individually to the respective learning group. In this way, learning at the learning locations nursing school and nursing home is linked and the direct and virtual learn-related interaction between the pupils is supported.

Further project modules consist of advising the participating institutions on how to ensure the necessary technical infrastructure and developing a lecturer training course both as an online and a face-to-face offer.

After completion of the project, the learning environment, the three CARO modules and the online tutorial for teachers will be published as open source on a public repository. Results and findings of the project will also be incorporated into the further development of the model of interactionist nursing didactics.
