The aim of this course is to create an understanding of the major aspects of sports applications. The course is split into two parts: the first half has a classic lecture/tutorial style, whereas the second half will focus on the creation of individual sports applications.

The lectures will explain the necessary fundamentals, such as sensor technology, user feedback, and the conduction of empirical studies, along with a number of inspiring examples.

In the project part, own prototypes for sports applications are developed in small groups. The exact application as well as the technical implementation approach can be chosen freely. The final graded outcome of the course will be a small sports application about which a presentation has to be held and a documentation in a scientific paper style has to be written.

The course will be held in English.

Android applications present unique challenges for code analysis due to their event-driven nature, complex lifecycle, and deep interaction with the underlying system. These characteristics make it particularly difficult to identify and reason about security vulnerabilities and privacy risks. This seminar explores fundamental concepts and recent advances in Android code analysis, with a focus on understanding and addressing security and privacy issues. It bridges theoretical foundations with practical tools and real-world applications. Key techniques in static and dynamic analysis are discussed to understand program behavior, detect vulnerabilities, and assess potential privacy leaks. Participants will independently study selected academic literature and present their findings, emphasizing critical thinking and clear communication. Due to the interactive format and individual supervision, participation is limited to approximately 20 students to ensure high-quality guidance and fair assessment.

During a three-week intensive project phase, interdisciplinary and largely international teams of students work in small groups on real-world tasks set by companies and institutions.

Rough schedule:

April 17: Information event to present the practice-oriented teaching format.
May 24: First application deadline for an improved chance of getting your desired project.
June 1: Publication of remaining places
June 28: Deadline for applying for remaining places – project assignment: first-come, first-served basis.
July 6: Publication of project assignments (team building)
Until July 24: First meeting of team members and getting to know each other and onboarding by project partners - Development of the kick-off presentation
July 27 - July 30: Preparatory workshops (3 mandatory plus additional optional workshops)
July 31 (noon): Submission of the kick-off presentation
August 3: Joint kick-off event for all teams and companies. Presentation of introductory presentations – everyone gets to know each other!
August 3–August 20: Individual project work in teams (full-time = at least 30 hours/week) / in between, mandatory and voluntary coaching sessions with the teaching team as well as 2–3 social after-work events. Goal: Submission of the final presentation (coordinated with the company) / final or detailed presentation in advance at the company
August 21: Final event with final presentations in front of all teams and companies as well as interested audience. Followed by a social gathering.
