The Julia and Johannes Weertman Medal honors researchers who have made outstanding contributions to the understanding of ice and snow processes. Named after two glaciology pioneers, this award is one of the most prestigious in the field. The award ceremony will take place in May 2026 as part of the EGU General Assembly.
Olaf Eisen has been a glaciology professor at the Alfred Wegener Institute and the University of Bremen since 2014. He completed a Diplom degree in geophysics at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) in 1999 and a doctoral degree at the University of Bremen in 2003. He has been working in the field of cryosphere sciences since 1996.
In the course of his academic education, he conducted field research in both polar regions as well as alpine glaciers, employing glaciologic and geophysical methods to investigate cryospheric phenomena, particularly those related to climate change. His research focuses on understanding the characteristics of glaciers and ice sheets, as well as the reciprocal interactions between these systems and their environment.
