After graduating
You want to stay in Germany

From studying to working life
After graduation, many international students ask themselves what to do next. Support you can get from the Career Center team, even during your studies. The Career Center is a joint institution of the University of Bremen and the Bremen-Bremerhaven Employment Agency. You can find initial information on entering the job market in the following two explanatory videos:
- Video “Transition between studies and career (german only)”
- Video “Work permit”
The following applies to the period after graduation: For your continued stay in Germany, you must apply for a residence permit for the purpose of seeking employment in accordance with § 20 Para. 1 No. 1 AufenthG.
The resident permit is issued for up to 18 months in order to find qualified employment in Germany. As long as you are looking for a job, you are allowed to work in any occupation. As soon as you have a qualified job, you can have your residence permit for studying converted into a residence permit for skilled workers or an EU Blue Card.
As the transition into the job market can sometimes be a bit challenging, the Career Center has published a new video series. In “Between Career and Campus”, some international students talk about their journey. Enjoy watching and stay motivated:
- Manish from India, Master in International Relations, youth worker at an NGO
- Syed from Pakistan, Master in Control, Microsystems and Mircoelectronics, PCB Designer at Salt and Pepper
- Jichen Guo from China, Master in Communication and Information Technology, researcher at DFKI

Deregistration with the city
If you are moving permanently to another country, it is necessary to deregister at the relevant BürgerserviceCenter. To do this, you must fill out this form and bring it to the city office together with your identity card one week before you move away.
Cancelling health insurance
You can usually cancel your private health insurance up to three months before the end of the insurance year (depending on the start of the contract). You should state in the cancellation letter that you are moving to another country. For all statutory health insurance companies, you must (as a rule) send a cancellation letter two months in advance - unless it is a fixed-term contract. You can find samples on this website.
Cancelling the licence fee
To cancel your contract, you must declare on the form that you are moving away (‘that I am moving abroad permanently’).
Additional cancellations
You should remember to cancel your internet provider, sports club, telephone contracts and bank account etc. If you are moving away from Bremen and/or Germany, special cancellation deadlines usually apply.
